The objective of this Desk Study is to carryout a strategic review to assess the feasibility of developing a viable seaweed aquaculture industry in Ireland.
The Desk Study deliverables will include:
- A short review of the status (and success) of seaweed aquaculture world-wide.
- A detailed review of appropriate seaweed aquaculture experiences in NE Europe.
- An identification of the seaweed species (green, red, brown), their by-products and economic value, which lend themselves to aquaculture production in Irish waters.
- An assessment of the present Irish expertise and trained personnel capable of supporting a national seaweed aquaculture development programme.
- An assessment/identification of priority RTDI Needs/Projects necessary to support a national seaweed aquaculture development programme.
- An assessment of the availability of suitable sites for seaweed aquaculture development in view of competition from salmon/shellfish aquaculture and other coastal resource uses, including SAC (Special Areas of Conservation) designations.
An outline strategy for the development of a national seaweed aquaculture development programme over the next ten years.
