Enzyme screening in macroalgae (Marine Institute post-doctoral fellowship)
I
n conjunction with the biochemistry department of NUI, Galway (Dr Maria Tuohy) an enzyme screening project of macroalgae has been iniated to identify key enzymes (biocatalysts) required for carbohydrate biosynthesis. The potential of these enzymes as biotechnological tool is tremendous with the
ultimate aim to produce bioactive carbohydrate anti-tumour, anti-viral, immunostimulatory agents, pesticides, nutraceuticals and biopharmaceuticals.
This project runs for 3 years an finishes in 2005. Dr Bob Wilkes (robert.wilkes[at]nuigalway.ie) is the responsible person in the Irish Seaweed Centre for this project.
Asparagopsis armata, a red alga with many bioactive molecules and which is used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry.
